Can I see someone online in Washington?

Telehealth is a medical visit at a distance: by video, by phone, or through a health form sent for review. The state you are in during the visit matters.

Whose state rules apply?

As of September 2026, Washington law places online visits in the patient’s state at the time, whether care uses video, phone or a health form.

The doctor, nurse practitioner or other licensed person treating you from another state generally needs a Washington licence or other permission to practise here.

Exceptions are limited. They include follow-up after treatment in the other state when a patient is only visiting Washington. Ask which licence or exception permits that person to treat you here.

Tell the service where you expect to be when the visit takes place. If plans change, ask it to check that location before proceeding.

Must the first visit be live video?

As of September 2026, Washington allows a first visit by video or another telehealth method. It can include a health form and records that the person treating you reads later.

But a first visit made up only of emails, texts, instant messages or faxes is not allowed under this law. A medical visit where records are sent and reviewed later is different from simply sending a message.

A form alone is not automatically a proper visit. As of September 2026, the national group representing state medical boards says a fixed tick-box form is not enough. The person reviewing it must be able to ask further questions and get the health information needed.

Whatever method is used, the person treating you must gather the information needed for the same health check you would receive in person. Ask how you will answer further questions and where you will go if an exam or test is needed.

Is the standard lower over a screen?

As of September 2026, Washington applies the same care standards to online visits and similar visits in person.

Those standards include prescribing, consent and privacy.

Consent means agreeing to care after its terms have been explained. Ask how questions and follow-up will work.

What backs up the answer?

Washington / location and method

Washington’s online care law says the visit happens where the patient is. It also sets rules for how care with that patient can start.
